JOHN DERIAN LACQUER TRAYS

Our handmade lacquer trays are a loyal reproduction of a favorite 19th-century tray from John’s private collection. These wood trays are lacquered using a mixture of fine natural tree sap from trees in Phu Tho Province in Northern Vietnam and Nam Vang in Cambodia, mixed with cashew oil. Each piece requires meticulous hand application of roughly fifteen layers of lacquer. A very slow drying time in a humid environment between each layer ensures consistent quality, while a final step of wet-sanding with fine carbon paper contributes to the perfectly smooth finish of these trays.

There is no prescribed drying time or set number of layers, this is up to the artisan’s own instincts. As such, each tray is truly unique.

The Lacquer Company prides itself on upholding all aspects of this ancient craft. All of the components of this art appeal to John’s keen interest in handmade processes, which made this collaboration a perfect fit.

Care: Lacquer is delicate and may be scratched. Clean only with a very soft, damp cloth as paper towels can be too abrasive. If scratches appear, Turtle Wax or any similar car wax may be gently applied to restore the finish.
