In the Drawer: The Holiday Tree

Our popular “Holiday Tree” design is featured in this month’s dive into the drawer. A tiny cut-out of a tree from a 19th-century scrapbook in John’s collection adorns plates, trays, charms, paperweights, and a vase in collaboration with Astier de Villatte.

It was most likely clipped from a 19th-century German Bilderbogen – a printed illustrated sheet made for children to teach vocabulary, animals, moral rhymes, and everyday objects. These sheets were widely exported to the US and commonly used in Victorian scrapbooking.
