In the Drawer: The Rabbit

In the Drawer: This month, we feature The Rabbit—Lepus cuniculus, engraved by Josiah Wood Whymper from Zoological Sketches published by R. Clay for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, England, c. 1844.

Our little friend appears on John’s designs of postcards, platters, and trays. The exact origins of the mammal’s association with Easter are unclear, but rabbits, known for their prolific breeding, are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life.
