Celebrating 30 Years in New York City

30—count ‘em — 30 years in NY!

This month marks the 30th anniversary of John’s first shop in New York. A few years after starting his one-man decoupage design business in Boston, he moved to New York in the early 1990s. As orders increased, he hired a team of artisans to craft his motifs and opened his first shop in 1995 on 2nd Street in the East Village... a quiet block that would soon become his creative hub.

In those early days, John began making his plates, trays, and paperweights in the back of the shop behind a curtain, and sold it up front alongside a growing collection of vintage and handmade objects, art and whatever caught his eye. Eventually, he outgrew the backroom and production moved to a dedicated studio a few blocks away on Chrystie Street, where a small team of artisans continue to make each piece by hand just as he had from the start.

As space on the block became available, John saw an opportunity to expand his emporium of ceramics, textiles, antiques, art, holiday, and furniture from his collection with Cisco Brothers (a collaboration inspired by John’s collection of 19th-century pieces collected throughout the years), into three consecutive storefronts on the same block. Today, 6, 8, and 10 East 2nd street remain destinations for design enthusiasts and decoupage fans. Throughout his time in New York, John has created a wide design presence through collaborations with companies and artists like Designers Guild, Astier de Villatte, Pierre Frey, Jeanette Farrier, Target and a line of paper goods including two published picture books.

In 2008, John opened a seasonal shop in Provincetown, Massachusetts, a longtime personal getaway that also reflects his love of coastal New England and history and introduced a West Village outpost on Christopher Street in 2018... two small outposts that echoed the charm and spirit of the East Village shops. To commemorate 30 years in New York, John has collaborated with the UK brand The Jacksons to create a vibrant, 100% sustainable jute bag. As a love letter to the city that has shaped John's work for the past three decades, we are also highlighting a selection of decoupage designs featuring antique postcards, maps, and ephemera related to New York City.

Anniversary Tote

To mark 30 years in New York, John Derian has created a special woven tote bag in collaboration with The Jacksons of London. Handwoven by local artisans in Bangladesh, the bag is made from 100% jute (a strong, low-impact plant that grows quickly and supports the health of the soil). The tote celebrates John’s three decades of inspiration on East 2nd Street in New York City.
